Donald Trump warned Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan not to “be a tough guy” or “a fool” in a bizarre letter sent last week.

The US President told Erdogan that he “didn’t want to be responsible for destroying the Turkish economy,” and asked him to “work out a good deal.”

President Trump also said Erdogan “didn’t want to be responsible for slaughtering thousands of people” in the letter dated last Wednesday.

It was sent as Turkish forces launched an attack on northern Syria.

President Trump continued: “I have worked hard to solve some of your problems. Don't let the world down. You can make a great deal.

"History will look upon you favourably if you get this done the right and humane way.

"It will look upon you forever as the devil if good things don't happen.”

He ended the extraordinary letter: "Don't be a tough guy. Don't be a fool! I will call you later."

The letter’s authenticity was initially questioned, but NBC and CNN said its contents had been confirmed by a White House official.
