The wife of Tarzan actor Ron Ely has been stabbed to death by their son, who was then shot dead by police.

Valerie Lundeen Ely, 62, was found dead with multiple stab wounds inside the couple's California home on Tuesday night, Santa Barbara County sheriff's department said.

The statement says deputies found the couple's son, 30-year-old Cameron Ely, hiding outside the house after a search.

Authorities said he was shot and killed after posing "an unspecified threat".

The couple had been married for 35 years before Valerie's death.

There was no report of 81-year-old Mr Ely being injured.

However, earlier statements from the sheriff's office said an elderly man from the home was taken to a hospital for evaluation.

Ron Ely starred in a Tarzan TV series on NBC from 1966 to 1968.

He and his wife Valerie, a former Miss Florida, have two other children together, Kirsten and Kaitland.
